Barnsley and League One rivals Charlton Athletic were both said to be interested in the winger ahead of the winter transfer window. Millwall were also interested, but Sagoe Jr joined Swansea City on loan for the rest of the season.
It was a move that did not work out, as he only made two appearances from the bench in the Championship. He has now been given the opportunity to establish his value in League One, joining Shrewsbury on a season-long loan move.
Sagoe Jr, described as a long-term Shrewsbury target, signed new terms with Arsenal before going out on loan.
Shrewsbury manager Paul Hurst told the club’s website: “I’m delighted to have Charles Sagoe Junior on board because I believe we have been lacking options in that wide area.
“He is a player we have been pursuing for a while; we were interested in him during the January transfer window. And he went on tour with Arsenal this summer, so we had to wait to get him.
“I believe the fact that we have been interested in him for some time has aided our cause in getting the trade completed. Now we need to get him up to speed because his pre-season has been a little different since he went away with Arsenal.
He has got some game time, but not a lot – I believe he has acknowledged this himself. However, we will do everything we can to get him up to speed as soon as possible, whether that means coming off the bench or starting games and seeing how long he can last. We are thrilled to have him in.”
