The Tampa Bay Buccaneers left one open space on their 91-man preseason roster with a couple of personnel changes on Monday morning, but it didn’t last long. While the squad began its new week of practice at the AdventHealth Training Center, rookie defensive lineman Brandon Matterson was upstairs signing a contract. Matterson fills not just the roster void, but also an open slot on the defensive line group after Eric Banks was waived/injured a few hours ago.

Matterson (6-2, 295) entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Denver Broncos this spring after attending Texas-San Antonio. He was eventually waived by Denver approximately a week into training camp.

Matterson started 20 of UTSA’s 59 games between 2018 and 2023. During that time, he had 100 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and defended a pass, including 5.0 sacks in 2023. He will wear jersey number 56 for the Buccaneers.
