Sunderland are among the clubs looking to sign a Championship winner, according to a new claim.

The Black Cats have had a fantastic start to their Championship campaign, earning maximum points from their first two league games.

Regis Le Bris started his time in charge of Sunderland off to a good start with a win away at Cardiff City, and he has already earned another league win, thumping Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland’s summer signings

Sunderland’s transfer window has been rather calm since Le Bris took over as manager. The Black Cats underwhelmed last season, finishing significantly below expectations and only a few points above the dreaded dotted line.

As a result, there was speculation that Sunderland might try to mend their ways this summer by making some roster changes.

The club has signed some players and let some go, but it hasn’t been as busy as fans would have liked or expected. With more than a week left in the transfer window, the club has signed four players while losing eight.

Those four recruits were all on free transfers, demonstrating Sunderland’s desire to operate wisely and not waste money. The Black Cats have signed goalkeepers Simon Moore and Blondy Nna Noukeu from Coventry City and Stoke City, respectively.

They have also signed midfielder Alan Browne from Preston North End and winger Ian Poveda from Leeds United, who had a successful spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Sunderland’s transfer market has been quiet thus far, but that might change as the team enters a battle to sign a Championship winner.

Sunderland “on it” over Manuel Benson move

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Manuel Benson is expected to depart Burnley during current transfer window, with Sunderland among the clubs interested.

It is claimed that talks are taking place with Leeds United about a permanent move to Elland Road. However, in addition to the Yorkshire club, Sunderland and Norwich City are also “on it,” if they lose winger Jonathan Rowe during the transfer season.

Tavolieri goes on to say that personal terms will not be an issue for the 27-year-old, who scored 11 goals and three assists in 33 Championship appearances in his first season with the club, helping the Clarets win the title.

The winger had a great start at Turf Moor, but he struggled to duplicate that form in the Premier League last season. Benson appeared nine times for Lancashire during the 2023/24 season, eight of which were in the top tier, and he did not score or assist.
