Kyle Filipowski is being compensated like a first-round pick despite his tumble during the NBA Draft.
One of the biggest surprises at the NBA Draft in late June was Duke basketball forward Kyle Filipowski’s lack of a first-round selection.
Some estimates had the All-American as a lottery pick early in the draft process, but most outlets expected the 7-footer to be taken inside the first 30 picks in their final rankings.
Filipowski, on the other hand, fell to the No. 32 overall pick and was taken by the Utah Jazz instead. Things became even more official on Monday night, when the organization formally agreed to terms with the Duke basketball star.
Kyle Filipowski got a four-year, $12 million contract, the richest contract a second-round draft choice has signed in the last two years. According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the deal’s first-year worth pays Filipowski as if he were a mid-20s draft pick.

The four-year $12M contract is the largest for a player selected in the second round the last 2 years.
The first year salary is comparable to a player selected 22nd in the first-round.

Filipowski was the last of the Utah Jazz’s three draft picks to sign his rookie contract.
During the NBA Salt Lake City and Las Vegas Summer Leagues, Kyle Filipowski averaged 11.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.0 steals in 22.2 minutes per game. During his final game in Vegas, he recorded 26 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Throughout his sophomore season with the Blue Devils, he averaged 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.
It will be fascinating to watch how much playing time Kyle Filipowski gets in the NBA this season, but the Utah Jazz will undoubtedly give him every opportunity to prove his worth in the league.
