A new story has reportedly linked Penguins defenceman Kris Letang to the Montreal Canadiens.
Although a trade between the two teams does not appear to be imminent, there is a new report circulating in hockey circles that the Penguins and Canadiens discussed a trade earlier this summer. Jim Parsons, a Hockey Writers reporter, released a piece yesterday that covered a wide range of themes.
Among them were the Pittsburgh Penguins and Kris Letang. He heard a rumor from prominent Pittsburgh sports radio presenter Mark Madden, who stated that Letang wants to complete his career in Montreal and that the Penguins and Canadiens have discussed a possible move this summer. However, it is clear that the deal never materialized.
According to Mark Madden, an NHL insider who works for 105.9 The X and TribLive, the Pittsburgh Penguins are considering selling veteran defenseman Kris Letang to the Montreal Canadiens.
Kristopher Letang, who is in the third year of his $36.6 million contract, has been a key member of the Penguins’ defense.
As Parson points out, Letang is a player to watch in the future. Even if this present report is untrue, Letang may be marketed as a trade candidate in the coming years.
He still has four years left on his current contract, but the Penguins are expected to rebuild for the majority, if not all, of that time. They have also added Erik Karlsson as their new number one offensive blueliner. As a result, Letang could be a trade target in the coming year.
Letang will remain with Pittsburgh for the time being, but it would be fascinating to see if more trade talks with Montreal take place if the Penguins struggle in the 2024-25 season.

If the Penguins traded Letang, it would undoubtedly stun many in the NHL. After all, Kyle Dubas maintains that the team is committed to remaining competitive as long as Sidney Crosby is present. Letang is a member of that core. Trading him will be perceived as an admission that the team is no longer good enough. If that’s the case, what happens next? Trading Sidney Crosby? Anything’s conceivable.
